Spare Keys, Immobiliser Faults and Lost Key Solutions
Ford vehicles such as the Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, Kuga and Transit are some of the most common cars on UK roads. When a Ford key stops working or the immobiliser activates, the car will not start.
I run Auto Access, a mobile auto locksmith covering Durham and the North East. Most Ford key problems follow common patterns and can usually be diagnosed and programmed on site without needing a dealership or recovery truck.
What is Ford Key Programming
Ford keys contain a transponder chip that must be coded to the vehicle's immobiliser system. If the coding does not match, the engine will not start.
This applies to standard keys, remote flip keys and smart proximity keys.
Common Ford Key and Immobiliser Problems
Flashing PATS Light and No Start
A flashing PATS light means the immobiliser is not communicating with the ECU. This is often caused by a failed transceiver ring, wiring faults, or lost key coding after a battery issue.
Key Not Detected Message
Common on keyless Focus, Kuga and Mondeo models. Usually linked to a faulty proximity antenna, weak key battery, or lost synchronisation.
Remote Unlocks but Car Will Not Start
Very common on Fiesta, Focus and Transit models. The remote circuit works, but the immobiliser chip has failed or lost coding.
Ignition Barrel Will Not Turn
Wear inside the ignition barrel or a worn key blade is common on older Fiesta and Focus models. This can normally be repaired or replaced on site.

All keys lost on a Ford Focus with keyless entry and push button start in Newcastle. Two new smart keys were programmed on site so the customer could drive away the same day.
Lost All Ford Keys
For most Ford models from 2000 onwards, new keys can be created and programmed even if all originals are lost.
In most Ford vehicles, when all keys are lost, the system requires two new keys to be programmed into the vehicle before it will start correctly. This is part of Ford's built in security system.
Older models such as early Focus, Mondeo and some Transit vans may require EEPROM level programming where the immobiliser data is read directly before new keys are prepared.
If you have lost all keys, send your registration and location and I will confirm exactly what your Ford requires.

Spare key programmed for a Ford Transit Custom in Durham. The customer only had one working key and wanted a backup cut and coded on site.
Cost of Ford Key Programming in the UK
The price depends on the type of key and the age of the vehicle.
- Basic transponder key £70 to £120
- Remote key fob £100 to £180
- Smart key or keyless start £150 to £300 plus
Older Ford models are usually simpler. Newer smart key systems cost more due to programming time and security systems.

Can You Program a Ford Key Bought Online
Sometimes, but this is not something I do at Auto Access.
Many online keys are poor quality or contain incorrect security chips. If they fail during programming, it wastes time and money. I only supply keys I can guarantee will work correctly and reliably.
